Our Geneaology

Whakapapa

In Māori culture, whakapapa is a foundational concept that refers to genealogy, lineage, and the interconnected relationships between people, their ancestors, and the natural world. The term whakapapa translates to "to place in layers" or "to lay one thing upon another," symbolizing the layering of generations and the continuity of life. It embodies both a literal family tree and a broader, spiritual connection to the universe.

Significance to Whanau (Family)

  1. Identity and Belonging: Whakapapa is central to a person's identity, as it defines who they are and where they come from. It connects individuals to their ancestors (tūpuna) and provides a sense of belonging within their family (whānau), tribe (iwi), and sub-tribe (hapū).
  2. Cultural Knowledge: It preserves the history, values, and traditions of a family or tribe. Through whakapapa, stories, songs (waiata), and legends are passed down, ensuring cultural continuity.
  3. Social Structure: Whakapapa establishes relationships and responsibilities within a community. It dictates roles, obligations, and privileges within the family and tribal structure, influencing leadership, land rights, and decision-making.
  4. Spiritual Connection: Whakapapa connects individuals not only to their human ancestors but also to the land (whenua), waterways, and the spiritual realm. It emphasizes the interdependence between people and the environment.
  5. Healing and Wellbeing: Understanding whakapapa can be a source of healing and grounding, helping individuals reconnect with their roots, especially in times of identity loss or disconnection from cultural heritage.

In Essence

Whakapapa is more than a record of lineage; it is a living, breathing framework that shapes how Māori perceive themselves and their place in the world.
